PASADENA, Calif. -- Manchester United made an impressive debut under coach Louis van Gaal on Wednesday night, with Wayne Rooney scoring twice late in the first half of a 7-0 victory over the LA Galaxy. Ashley Young and unsung defender Reece James scored two second-half goals apiece as United opened its summer tour with a surprisingly polished win over MLS overmatched Galaxy in the Guinness International Champions Cup. Danny Welbeck scored the first goal for Van Gaal, who has had limited work with his new club after leading the Netherlands to a third-place finish at the World Cup earlier this month. United still outclassed the Galaxy in the meeting of David Beckhams two former clubs. Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera also made their United debuts at the historic Rose Bowl. Van Gaals tenure got off to a start reflecting the confidence of Uniteds veteran coach, who intends to return the 20-time English champions to immediate international prominence after David Moyes poor tenure. United finished seventh in Moyes only season as Alex Fergusons replacement after 26 years, failing even to qualify for Europa League play. Van Gaal is still adjusting to his new job after spending the summer with the Dutch team, but he is already planning to spend more time around Old Trafford next summer. Van Gaal spoke out against lucrative preseason tours this week, saying the lengthy U.S. stay hinders his preparations for the season. Van Gaal might not like the summer tour, but United got it off to a sparkling start with goals from likely and unlikely sources. Rooney wasnt Uniteds captain, ceding the job to Darren Fletcher, but the England star easily handled his scoring chances. James wasnt even listed on Uniteds 25-man roster, but the 20-year-old defender provided two outstanding finishes against the Galaxys ragged defence. Herrera, the Spanish midfielder acquired from Athletic Bilbao last month, also looked sharp early. United scored its first goal under Van Gaal when Juan Mata set up Welbeck in the 13th minute for a low 25-yard shot off Jaime Penedos post. After A.J. De La Garza was whistled for a handball in the 42nd minute, Rooney easily buried the penalty even though Penedo guessed correctly. Four minutes later, Welbecks centring pass went through the legs of Galaxy defender Tommy Meyer, who crumpled to the ground as Rooney walked the gift into Penedos net. James put a sharp side-footed finish on a pass from Young for Uniteds fourth goal in the 62nd minute. He then scored from distance on a deflection in the 82nd minute before Young capitalized on defensive blunders for two late goals. The Rose Bowl was largely full for the late-starting friendly, with United supporters easily outnumbering the home teams fans. Thousands of Mexican fans in the announced crowd of 86,432 likely showed up hoping to see embattled striker Javier Hernandez, but Chicharito stayed on Uniteds bench. Even at a friendly, several fans exchanged shoves and yells outside the venerable stadiums southwest gate before security intervened. Uniteds tour continues Saturday in Denver against AS Roma, followed by matches with Inter Milan in Washington on Tuesday and Real Madrid in Michigan on Aug. 2. Saucony Scontate Outlet . Sanchez and right-handed pitcher Esmil Rogers had their contracts selected from triple A-Buffalo and shortstop Ryan Goins was recalled from the Bisons. To make room, left-handed reliever Brad Mills was designated for assignment and catcher Erik Kratz and outfielder Darin Mastroianni were optioned to the minors. "You hope (to get a spark)," manager John Gibbons said. "That wasnt the purpose of it, but we could use a little bit of that, so well see. Itd bring a lot more excitement if we could get results on the field." The 22-year-old Sanchezs addition is the most intriguing, even as Gibbons said hell be used exclusively out of the bullpen. Sanchez was a first round pick of the Blue Jays in 2010 and is considered one of the top 50 prospects in baseball. "Hes got an overpowering, live fastball," Gibbons said. "He gets a lot of ground balls. Hes got a nice curveball. When hes on, hes a tough at-bat." Sanchez is a starter, but with 100 minor league innings under his belt already this season, the Blue Jays want to limit him to about 130. "We plan on using him," Gibbons said. "Were not going to baby him but well keep an eye on him." Sanchez said his first call upon learning he was going to the majors was made wearing just a towel in the visiting clubhouse Monday night in Allentown, Pa.dddddddddddd, where the Bisons were playing the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs. The Bristow, Calif., native then rode up to Toronto on Tuesday. "This has been an unbelievable 24 hours for me," he said. It has been a forgettable 24 hours for the Blue Jays after getting smacked by the Boston Red Sox in the series opener at Rogers Centre. Mills, who gave up eight earned runs -- including two home runs to David Ortiz -- was the first victim and got designated for assignment because Toronto needed someone who could eat up innings Tuesday and beyond. Thatll be Rogerss job for now. "After last night, if something happens early in this game or it went extra innings we had no length out of anybody out there," Gibbons said. "(Rogers had) been pitching much better down there, too." Goins will "play a lot" at second base, according to Gibbons, who wouldnt go so far as to say he was the de facto starter there. With Brett Lawrie still injured, Munenori Kawasaki could see more time at third base, with Juan Fransisco shifting to first. Kratz was sent down, Gibbons said, because the Blue Jays dont need a right-handed-hitting catcher this week. They still have switch-hitting Dioner Navarro and lefty Josh Thole on the roster. ' ' '
