Square Enix's HD-2D-themed games have received a lot of positive recognition from gamers. The games like Octopath Traveler or Triangle Strategy have really captured the attention of nostalgic gamers in part because of their distinctive art style.
In a new chat with 4Gamer (translated from Nintendo Everything), Triangle Strategy producer Tomoya Asano talked about the design style and how it's going to be implemented for future games developed by the company. The interviewer was shocked at the lack of indie games that have adopted the same style, Asano revealed the reason that it's quite expensive!
"It's probably worth noting that it's more expensive than you'd imagine. It's an ideal match for the games you'd like to see from Square Enix. There might not be much to gain by other companies copying the style," Asano told 4gamer.Fortunately that doesn't stop Square Enix from releasing more games that follow this model.
Remakes of Live a Live is set to launch exclusively for Nintendo Switch in July, while a remake for Dragon Quest III is currently in the process of being made. There are many other games which could benefit from this style and it will be fascinating to find out what Square Enix does with HD-2D in the future. While the company has clearly committed to this design, Asano went on to reveal that there is no currently a "definitive bible," and it will remain evolving as games change.
"We haven't put together something like this. The way in which it's written differs for each title, meaning that the HD-2D-style will be slightly different every time. When you play Live A Live for example the setting in the prehistoric portion will differ from the sci-fi story.
Our range of expression has grown thanks to the fresh ideas we've come up with. "While the cost might be prohibitive for some developers, HD-2D has clearly become a a point of sale for a lot of gamers. Hopefully, we'll continue to see Square Enix find new ways to extend the look as well as a host of other games to be made!
