NEW YORK -- A person familiar with the deal says the New York Yankees have signed free-swinging corner infielder Mark Reynolds. Reynolds was released by the Cleveland Indians last week after a monthslong slump. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Thursday night because the deal has not been announced. Reynolds will provide a right-handed bat to back up lefty swinging Lyle Overbay at first base and could spell Alex Rodriguez at third. Reynolds batted .301 with eight homers in April, but just .187 since. He went .098 (5 for 51) with one RBI in July. SALT LAKE CITY -- Suspended Utah receiver Cory Butler-Byrd was charged Tuesday with criminal mischief after authorities say he damaged a university police patrol car and building last month.Police said in court documents filed Tuesday that officers at the university on July 27 heard a loud pop and the sound of glass breaking outside the campus police office, where they found Butler-Byrd readying to throw a large white sign. A window to the building was broken and a nearby patrol car had a smashed rear windshield and dented roof.The senior told police he damaged the car and building by throwing a piece of wood through a window.
