West Virginia and Baylor both saw their Big 12 title hopes squashed by mid-November, but both still have plenty to play for in their regular season finale on Saturday afternoon in Morgantown, W. Va..Baylor (6-5, 3-5 Big 12), which has dropped five in a row since beginning the season with a 6-0 start that included an impressive 35-24 victory over Oklahoma State, could finish with a winning record for the seventh straight season by beating 14th-ranked Mountaineers. Thats something that has never been done before in school history.West Virginia (9-2, 6-2) can win 10 games for just the ninth time in school history. And if the Mountaineers can also pick up a victory in a bowl game, Dana Holgorsens squad would match the school record with an 11-win season. Not bad for a team picked to finish seventh in the Big 12s preseason media poll.If that isnt enough to get West Virginia fired up, theres this: 62-38. Thats the score of the Mountaineers loss to Baylor last year in Waco, Texas. We all know what this one means, defensive coordinator Tony Gibson told The Dominion Post. We know what Baylor brings. Weve had Dec. 3, 2016, marked down for a long time. Our kids will have a great week, and theyll be jacked up and hopefully our fans will come out and support those seniors who have done something weve never done -- six wins in the Big 12. We have a lot to be proud of in this team.Baylor comes in off an embarrassing 54-35 loss to a Texas Tech team that finished the season 5-7. Despite a nightmarish year that featured the firing of head coach Art Briles and a sexual assault scandal -- 17 women reported 19 sexual or physical assaults involving football players since 2011, including four gang rapes -- the school announced it still planned to play in a bowl game. Our intent, at this time, is to accept a bowl bid for our student-athletes who have worked so hard to earn it over the course of this season, Baylor athletic director Mack Rhoades said in a statement provided to ESPN. Our focus, as it has been throughout the season, is on our student-athletes and trying to finish strong against a great West Virginia team this weekend in Morgantown.Im very, very proud of our players who have remained loyal to Baylor. Theyve given me 100-plus reasons for hope in these difficult times, interim head coach Jim Grobe said. The 64-year-old Grobe announced on Monday that he will not return to coach after this season. SMUs Chad Morris is considered the frontrunner to take over.Honestly, football needs a fresh start, Grobe said. All the other sports here are in great shape right now, and I would expect the next coach to have football competing for championships in a hurry. Whoever gets this job is going to be very fortunate.Freshman quarterback Zach Smith, taking over for injured starter Seth Russell (ankle surgery), passed for 377 yards and three TDs against Texas Tech. Grobe said he improved significantly from his first start a week earlier against Kansas State. Smith will have to improve further for Baylor to win at West Virginia.Bears wide receiver KD Cannon has been a standout on an otherwise lackluster Baylor offense this season. He caught 12 passes for 132 yards and two TDs against Texas Tech. With one game left in the season, he needs 95 yards to reach 1,000 for the season.Sophomore Terence Williams took over the role as Baylors go-to running back this season. He leads the team in rushing by 133 yards over senior Shock Linwood. Williams needs 155 yards to reach 1,000 for the season.West Virginia comes in off an impressive 49-19 victory at Iowa State. With his top three tailbacks all out due to injury, Holgorsen decided to take the redshirt off true freshman Martell Pettaway in the 11th game of the season. Pettaway responded by rushing 30 times for 180 yards and a touchdown. We had no choice, Holgorsen said. If he was a selfish guy, he wouldnt have been on board with that. ... He took advantage of his opportunity. With Pettaway starring, quarterback Skyler Howard threw only 21 passes, completing 12 for an outrageous 330 yards. Thats an average of 27.5 yards per completion, and five of those went for TDs. Baylor is second in the conference in pass defense at 234.2 yards per game, but it was destroyed by Texas Techs Patrick Mahomes last week and could get shelled again by Howard on Saturday. Winning one for her seriously ill grandmother was. Webb, who nearly returned home to Australia on Thursday when her parents informed her that her grandmother, Marion Webb, was near death, delivered some welcome medicine Sunday, rallying from five shots down for a two-stroke victory and her 39th career tour win -- most among active players. "She talked to me on the phone and said she didnt want me to come home, and that I had to win one for her," the teary-eyed Webb said after digging deep to overcome the blustery conditions that derailed almost everyone in the field on wind-whipped Bay Course at the Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club. Webb knew winning wasnt going to be easy. While she has had occasional good rounds on this course across the bay from the Atlantic City casino resort, the Hall of Famer has never really seriously contended on the final day. "I was like, this isnt the one that you tell me that I have to win for you because I was like, Ive never really even had a shot to win here," Webb said. "So when I got off to that start, I was like, Oh, my God. Well, when she started to make a turn for the better, my dad said, Look, shes going to make it, so the pressure is off, you know. He felt for me after she told me I had to win it for her. But you know, I was in contention and in the lead today. I was like, Wow, I might actually be able to do this for her." Webb won by shooting a magnificent 3-under 68 to finish with a 4-under 209 total, tying the highest winning score at the course. Playing in wind gusting to 25 to 30 mph, Webb had two birdies, an eagle and a bogey, capping the round with a 5-foot birdie at the par-5 final hole. She also made six par-saving putts of 5-6 feet in matching the best round of the day. "It never gets old. It never gets any easier, either," said Webb, who won the Australian Ladies Masters in February. "Today was extremely tough, and Im just glad that I pulled it out. I think coming down I knew I needed to make one birdie, I thought, because I didnt think I could just par in and feel comfortable, so great birdie on the last." Shanshan Feng was second. Feng, who led by three shots entering the final round, struggled in the wind and finished with a 75. She had two double bogeys on the front 9, and gave away the lead with bogeys on the 11th and 13th holes. Feng, who became the first Chinese player to win an LPGA Tour event and a major when she captured the LPGA Championship last year, gave credit to Webb.dddddddddddd "I would say 68 is a really, really great score for today," said Feng, who broke in a new set of clubs this week. "I would say actually four over didnt sound too bad to me. But maybe thats why Ive never played well in the British Open. Yet." Hamiltons Alena Sharp (78) and Sara-Maude Juneau (74) of Fossambault, Que., finished at 9 over in a group tied for 64th, while Jessica Shepley (75) of Oakville, Ont., was a shot further back in a tie for 69th. The final round played out somewhat like a U.S. Open with the elements, the dried-out fast greens and the fescue-lined fairways working like a demolition derby on the 74 players who qualified for the final round. Webb, who got back into contention with a 69 in the second round, made her move early, rolling in a 25-foot birdie putt on the difficult 420-yard second hole that might have been the toughest on the course with the wind blowing into the players faces off Reeds Bay. She moved into a share of the lead on the par-5 third, rolling in a 6-foot eagle. "I think I knuckle down and focus a lot better when conditions are tough," Webb said. Feng, who fell into a tie with Webb early, regained the lead with a short birdie at the eighth hole. but bogeys at the 11th and 13th holes put Webb 1-up. Webbs birdie at the 18th hole pushed the margin to two shots. Feng closed within a shot with a short birdie putt at No. 16 but she hit her tee shot in the bunker at the next hole and bogeyed. She needed an eagle at the par-5 final hole but had to settle for par. Jenny Shin of South Korea, who had four straight birdies on the back nine, finished fourth at even par after a 70. Rookie Chie Arimura, who was tied for the lead on the front nine, finished in a group at 1 over. Despite a final round 74, Michelle Wie event, had her best finish of the year, finishing in a group at 2 over. "Overall I fought hard, and Im pretty proud of the way I played this week and I think its a good week leading up to a major, so Im just excited to get over there and play well," said Wie, who is still looking for her first LPGA Tour win in the United States. There were only 13 rounds under par on the final day and those with early tee-off times benefited. Cristie Kerr and Paula Creamer also shot 68 to tie Webb for the best round of the day and it allowed them to move from a tie for 58th to a tie for 13th. Feng will defend her LPGA Championship in Pittsford, N.Y., next week. ' ' '
