RALEIGH, N.C. -- Just when it seemed as though Carolina was heading toward a six-game losing streak, Jordan Staal and Manny Malhotra scored late to give the Hurricanes a much-needed win. Malhotra, who played his third game since signing with the Hurricanes on Oct. 31, scored 2:40 into overtime, and Carolina skated off with a 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday night. Malhotras drive from the slot on a breakaway got past goalie Steve Mason. "I wanted to make sure I got a quick shot off," Malhotra said. "I think it surprised him. We did a lot of good things as a team, and scoring is the icing on the cake. Im just trying to do the little things that make teams successful." The Hurricanes forced overtime after Staal scored with 52.3 seconds left in regulation, with goalie Justin Peters on the bench in favour of an extra skater. "We stuck with our game the whole 60 minutes," Staal said. "For us to rebound, it shows the character in this room that we can keep battling through some tough times. It was nice to see us bounce back after that goal they scored." Philadelphias Scott Hartnell scored his first of the season on a power play with 3:58 left in regulation. But the Flyers couldnt hold on and went to overtime for the first time. "Its nice to score a goal and to get a point, but it obviously leaves a sour taste in your mouth when they score two goals in less than a couple of minutes," Hartnell said. "I think we played smart with the puck except for a few shifts, and unfortunately we werent able to get the other point." Peters stopped 28 shots and earned his first win of the season. He made his fifth straight start in place of the injured Cam Ward. "We gave up the late goal, but for us to stay with it was rewarding," Peters said. "We played the right way. We want to use this momentum. It feels good, and weve got to want this again." The Flyers, who have lost three of four, have scored more than two goals only once this season in 14 games. Carolina was 0-of-4 on the power play, including a 5-on-3 advantage that carried over into the third period. Philadelphia, which has the 29th ranked power play in the NHL, went 1 for 4 with a rare man-advantage goal. Mason made a season-high 36 saves on 38 shots, also a season high. Mason, 5-2 in his career against Carolina, made a season-high 36 saves on 38 shots, also a season high. NOTES: Carolina activated RW Radek Dvorak from the injured list after he missed three games because of a lower-body injury. ... Philadelphia captain Claude Giroux is seeking his first goal of the season. Dating to last season, Giroux hasnt scored in 19 games. (Sept. 6, 2014) – It took a few extra laps, but Jason Hathaway left Barrie Speedway with a win Saturday night. The Dutton, Ontario, native won the Wahta Springs 300 for the second year in a row. It marked Hathaways second NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 victory of the season and fifth of his career. Pole winner J.R. Fitzpatrick finished second, followed by D.J. Kennington, L.P. Dumoulin and Jeff Lapcevich. Joey McColm, Noel Dowler, Erica Thiering, Matthew Scannell and Alex Tagliani rounded out the top 10. Saturday was the best career finish for rookies Thiering and Scannell. Hathaway became the first back-to-back winner at the track since Scott Steckly won both series events at the .333-mile tri-oval in 2008. "I knew in the end there, I wasnt going to give it up, no matter what it took," Hathaway said. "It was a hell of a battle with J.R. [Fitzpatrick] tonight, and Im glad it was him and nobody else, because we come out smiling at the end and shaking hands, talking about it all week because he and I are real good buddies." An accident on the frontstretch involving Tagliani on Lap 298 set up the green-white-checkered finish attempt. Fitzpatrick, looking for his first Barrie win, got the edge on the restart from the outside row and led by a nose at the white flag, but ultimately couldnt overcome Hathaway for the checkered flag. "I got the run I needed, going into Turn 3 (of the final lap) I was ahead and he shoved me up the hill just an extra little bit where I couldnt get to the throttle as soon as him," Fitzpatrick said. "It was exciting for the fans. It was close, really close." The final margin of victory was a miniscule 0.121 seconds. With one race to go, Dumoulin now leads Fitzpatrick in the championship standings by a tally of 418-402. "Its not very easy for my daughter to talk about me retiring and not playing football," Diehl said. "The Giants are just as much family to her as they are to me. Shes been going to the games and at 7 years old, she understands everything. She understands the game and the players and how important it is to play in the NFL. "For her, my stepping away from something she loves as much as I do is not an easy thing." Diehl was selected to the 2009 Pro Bowl. Diehl was the only Giants player whose arrival predated coach Tom Coughlin and Eli Manning. With his retirement, the longest-tenured Giants are guard Chris Snee and Manning. "When I think of David Diehl what comes to mind is his indomitable spirit," Coughlin said. "He got the most out of his God-given ability and thats the best way that you can judge any individual." DDiehl started the first 120 regular-season games and seven post-season games in his career, the longest such streak by a Giant since the introduction of the 16-game schedule in 1978.dddddddddddd The streak ended on Nov. 14, 2010 against Dallas because of hip and hamstring injuries. He ends his career with 164 regular-season games played, tying Phil Simms for 12th on the franchises all-time list. "I love football," he said. "I love being in the game, I love watching film, I love doing all of that and Im going to miss that aspect of it. But I know Im ready to start the new and next chapter of my life. Im ready to not only be a bigger part of my daughters life, but Im ready to spread my knowledge and help other people with the game and continue to do stuff throughout our community and charity work and be involved with the New York Giants in any way possible." In the regular season, Diehl started 65 games at left tackle, 42 at left guard, 26 at right tackle and 27 at right guard. In the post-season, Diehl has 10 starts at left tackle and one at left guard. "He took the talent that he had and he used it to the extreme, to the utmost of his ability," Coughlin said. "What more can you ask of the guy? And he gave great effort. He always gave great effort, there was no doubt about that. You knew exactly what you were getting."
