DENVER - Darcy Kuemper doesnt really want to be in net when the high-scoring Colorado Avalanche finally break out of their offensive funk. The Minnesota Wild goalie will gladly take his second straight shutout of the Avalanche and leave town, not having to face them again until February.Let some other goalie feel the wrath of a frustrated Colorado squad.Kuemper stopped 30 shots and Jason Zucker scored his first goal since January, helping the Wild beat the Avalanche 3-0 on Saturday night. That is a real good team, said Kuemper, who blanked Colorado 5-0 at home in the season opener on Thursday. But we stuck in there. We weathered a lot of their storms.Speaking of storms, fiery Colorado coach Patrick Roy didnt erupt over his inefficient offence, which has been bottled up by Kuemper through the first six periods of the season.Quite the opposite. Roy applauded the play of Gabriel Landeskog & Co., saying theyre on the verge of turning things around even though theyve been outshot 82-46 so far this season.Honestly, Im happy with our game, Roy said. Not with the result, but happy with the performance of our team. ... We can build on that game.Charlie Coyle added a goal and Zach Parise tapped in an empty-netter for the Wild. The Avalanche were one of the top scoring teams in the league last season, but havent been able to figure out Kuemper. He also shut out the Avalanche in Game 3 of their best-of-seven playoff series last season. The Wild advanced with an overtime win in the decisive game at the Pepsi Center.Could Kuemper be in their heads? He played a solid game. What more can you say? Landeskog said. Like any goalie, we have to make it tough on him.Zucker scored in the second period, his first goal since Jan. 16. He had surgery to fix a tendon in his quadriceps in March and missed the rest of the season.Semyon Varlamov made 31 saves for the Avalanche as their struggles in the preseason have carried over into the regular season. The Avs pulled Varlamov with 3 minutes remaining and when Matt Cooke drew an interference penalty with 2:33 left, they had a 6-on-4. Still, Colorado couldnt score.Parise guided in a goal into an empty net with 3.3 seconds left.Kuemper stopped everything shot in his vicinity. And even when he was out of position, the Avs couldnt capitalize, like when Tyson Barrie shot wide with Kuemper on the ground in the second period. The guys in front of me were unreal, Kuemper said. There was a little more work today, but our structure was there and they allowed me to read the plays well. Our structure keeps the play real predictable. It allows me to play with confidence.Down a goal heading into the second, the Avs tried to stir things up to get back into the game. Defenceman Erik Johnson went in for a hard check on Erik Haula and ended up delivering an elbow, sending Haula to the ice. Johnson was given a 5-minute major and a game misconduct for the hit.Asked if he thought Johnson might face punishment by the league, Roy said, Id be very surprised.Coyle thought he had his second goal of the game early in the second when he lifted a shot over Varlamov, who had Nino Niederreiter sprawled out on top of him. The goal was disallowed and the ruling upheld after a review.Soon after, Zucker lined a slap shot under the glove of Varlamov to give the Wild a two-goal cushion.Coyle got the Wild on the board before the capacity crowd even had time to settle into their seats when he redirected a shot past Varlamov.Roy has tried different line combinations, trying to find an offensive spark. But nothing has seemed to work against Kuemper.I take it a shot at a time and stay even keel, Kuemper said.NOTES: Minnesota had 2,500 fans show up to watch the game on the new screen at Xcel Energy Center. ... The Wild dont play again until Friday in Anaheim. ... The Wild are now 14-3-3 in their last 20 games in Denver. ... The only time Colorado was shut out last season was on March 21 against Boston. ... For the Athletics, hes extremely important at the top of the order, especially with Coco Crisp hurting. Jaso drove in three runs Sunday night, helping Scott Kazmir and Oakland beat the Texas Rangers 9-3.REGINA -- For two memorable seasons the Canadian Air Force was synonymous with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The formidable trio of Canadian receivers -- individually known as Chris Getzlaf, Rob Bagg and Andy Fantuz -- will share the field at Mosaic Stadium one more time on Sunday. This time though one of them will be wearing enemy colours when the 101st Grey Cup kicks off. Getzlaf and Bagg still represent the Roughriders but Fantuz will be flying in the opposite direction as a member of the Tiger-Cats after he signed with Hamilton as a free agent in February, 2012. "Obviously Andys a friend of a bunch of guys on the team and hes a great player in this league, but we havent talked once all week and I think were going to be waiting until after the game," Getzlaf said following the Riders walkthrough Saturday morning. Sundays game will be the first in over three years that Getzlaf, Bagg and Fantuz have played together in Regina. Bagg suffered a season-ending knee injury on Oct. 17, 2010, that, unbeknownst to anyone at the time, signalled the end of an era. The bum knee kept him out of the entire 2011 season as well, and Fantuz left to Hamilton before the 2012 season as a free agent. As a group they flew under the radar in their debut, playing together for the first time on Oct. 25, 2008. Fantuz had four catches for 62 yards and a touchdown, while Getzlaf caught two balls for 28 yards and Bagg had one grab for 22 yards in a 55-9 rout over the Edmonton Eskimos. The trio gained prominence over the next two years, combining for 5,234 yards receiving and 30 touchdown catches, and helping Saskatchewan to the Grey Cup in 2009 and 2010, before being grounded for good. Toogether, they stood very tall.dddddddddddd Divided, at least one of them is now guaranteed something they couldnt achieve as a team -- a Grey Cup ring. "I was talking to Rob Bagg earlier today and he was telling me how he was just 23 back in 2009 in his first Grey Cup," said Saskatchewan quarterback Darian Durant. "It was my first year starting also. We were just young pups, running around like a chicken with its head cut off, not realizing the moment. We were just out there playing. "But now we understand whats at stake, we understand what it takes to get the job done and I just like the vibe of the team." For the starting receivers on Sunday that vibe is a little less Canadian but arguably no less talented, fuelled by the speed and elusiveness of Weston Dressler, the increasingly sure-handed Getzlaf, a reliable short threat in Bagg, the big-play capability of Taj Smith and the addition of surefire Hall of Famer Geroy Simon in the off-season. The Roughriders celebrated three 1,000-yard receivers in 2013 for the first time in 20 years, with Getzlaf, Dressler and Smith all cracking the threshold. "These guys, I think theyre more mature now and they still have that mindset of Dont quit," said Riders head coach Corey Chamblin. "And thats one of the things that attracted me to this team and that Ive always liked about this team. Thats the biggest thing, I think theres a growth process there. "I also thought about today, I can remember when (Getzlaf) was younger and he was like third on the list for us to cover, and now hes one of those guys that needs to be first on the list to cover because hes grown so much."
