NEW YORK -- Coming off two 100-point seasons and their best playoff run in 23 years, the New York began this season with high hopes. Things havent been working out so well.Sixteen games into the season -- about one-fifth of the way through -- the Islanders are having trouble scoring goals and the losses are piling up.With just one win in the last seven games (1-3-3), they are just one point out of last place in the Eastern Conference and their 40 goals ranks in the middle of the pack in the conference and the league overall.I have not found the combinations to give us some offense, coach Jack Capuano said after the team was shut out for the first time this season Monday night. Its on me to find guys to play with certain guys. Our guys are well prepared for games. We have to be able to find some offense. The Islanders were booed through much of their latest loss -- 4-0 to Tampa Bay -- by the home fans looking for another strong season after finally reaching the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 1993 .I understand the frustration of the fans and frustration of the players, Capuano said. but for me, as a coach, Im behind these guys. I want them to succeed. Two months after their postseason ended last spring, the Islanders lost long-time stars Kyle Okposo, Frans Nielsen and Matt Martin on the first day of free agency , and replaced them with Andrew Ladd and Jason Chimera. The departed trio combined for 52 goals and 83 assists last season, while the two newcomers have totaled three goals and five assists so far.Capuano has shuffled the lines all season, searching for the right combinations -- especially for captain John Tavares, who spent most of the latter part of last season on the top line with Okposo and Nielsen. Ladd and Chimera began the season with Tavares. Chimera was then replaced by Josh Bailey. Ladd was then dropped down, with Shane Prince initially taking his place, but Cal Clutterbuck has been moved up there the last five games. The changes have rippled on the other lines as well.Tavares is still confident the team can turn things around. How many games do we got left, he said. You just keep going, keep working. You find your way out of it. Obviously we dont want to be in the spot that were in, but were not going to quit. We just got to stay positive and stay together. Therea plenty of time for improvement with 66 games remaining, but it needs to start soon. The Islanders began Tuesday only six points out of a playoff spot, but would need to jump over eight teams just to get in the Easts second wild card spot.Obviously it feels like everything is against us right now, Tavares said. Theres a long way to go at this point in the year. ... All you can do is work to sway the momentum, get some good results and try to build some momentum off that and build confidence.A strong home team the last two years, the Islanders had a chance to get off to a good start with their next game -- on Friday night against defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh -- being their 12th out of the first 17 at Barclays Center. The Islanders head into that 5-4-2 on home ice. That will be followed by a three-game trip to California next week with the team still looking for its first road win after going 0-4-1 in the first five.We have to get back practicing hard, get ready to go, obviously a big game Friday night and a big road trip, defenseman Travis Hamonic said. We just have to keep pushing forward. No ones feeling sorry for us.The poor start has put Capuano on the hot seat and with the coach repeatedly taking the blame for the teams scoring troubles, the pressure will likely only build.I can only control what I can control, Capuano said when asked if he was concerned whether general manager Garth Snow might consider a coaching change. Thats not my decision. I come to the rink every day like everybody else and work extremely hard. ... As Ive said, we have to find a way -- and it falls on me -- to try to get some offense out of this team.---Follow Vin Cherwoo at www.twitter.com/VinCherwooAPCustom Bob Uecker Jersey . OAKLAND, Calif. -- Once Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons offense got going, the Oakland Raiders struggled to stop them.Ryan threw for 396 yards and three touchdowns with help from a fortunate bounce, and the Falcons bounced back from a home loss to open the season by beating the Raiders 35-28 on Sunday. After being forced to punt on the first two drives of the game, the Falcons (1-1) scored on seven of their next eight possessions against a struggling Oakland defense to spoil the home opener for the Raiders (1-1).Once we kind of found our stride, we kept going and played really well, Ryan said. We did a better job in the red zone today. Still have some opportunities to continue to improve, areas we can get better. But, for the most part, I thought our guys played really well today. The Falcons ran the ball effectively with Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman combining for 139 yards on the ground, got a typical big day from star receiver Julio Jones, who had five catches for 106 yards and a score , and then got lucky at a key spot in the fourth quarter. With the game tied and Atlanta facing a third down, Ryans pass to Coleman was broken up. But the ball popped up in the air and went right to Justin Hardy in the end zone for 8-yard score that gave the Falcons the lead for good. That helped erase the bad feeling from last weeks 31-24 loss at home to Tampa Bay .We were all disappointed in the way that we started, so we went to work last week, tight end Jacob Tamme said. We were coming out here, big, long trip. Big trip to the West Coast, playing a team that was on a high after what they did last week, so I thought it was heck of a win, a great way to get on the right track. Here are some other takeaways from the Falcons win:STRUGGLING D: For a second straight week, Oaklands revamped defense struggled to stop anyone. After allowing 507 yards in a 35-34 win at New Orleans , the Raiders gave up 528 yards to the Falcons. Its the most yards allowed through two games since at least 1940, according to Pro Football Reference. Coach Jack Del Rio pulled linebacker Ben Heeeney in the second half after doing the same to cornerback Sean Smith a week ago and also took over play-calling duties late in the game from coordinator Ken Norton Jr.dddddddddddd.Im speechless, linebacker Bruce Irvin said. Ive never experienced this experience. Until everybody makes a full commitment to turning this thing around were going to be a subpar defense.NO HUDDLE: Atlanta frequently employed a no-huddle offense that left the Raiders defense scrambling at times. The Falcons went no-huddle on more than 25 plays, including TD passes to Jones and Tamme .We did a great job with the tempo -- it was effective for us, Ryan said. I thought we ran the ball extremely well out of no-huddle and also, we hit some big shots down the field. Going sideline to sideline with all the key plays that we did, I really thought it was effective for us.EFFICIENT OFFENSE: With Oaklands defense struggling, there is even more pressure on quarterback Derek Carr and the offense to pick up the slack. The Raiders have scored 63 points and gained 940 yards through two games without committing any turnovers. Carr went 34 for 45 for 299 yards and three TDs against the Falcons. The great thing about this team is were not going to be pulled apart, Carr said. We understand the situation. We understand whats going on. Theres nothing thats going to divide us, at all.TARGETING TIGHT ENDS: Ryan frequently found his tight ends for big gains, completing 10 passes for 180 yards and a TD to Tamme, Austin Hooper and Levine Toilolo. Covering tight ends was a major issue for the Raiders last season and is a problem that hasnt been solved yet. Oakland will get a tough test next week against Tennessees Delanie Walker.I dont think there were any physical mismatches out there, Del Rio said. It was a matter of guys having their eyes where theyre supposed to be and knowing what the heck theyre doing.---Online:AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFL ' ' '
