WOBURN, England -- Mirim Lee shot a 10-under 62 on Thursday to match the Womens British Open record and open a three-stroke lead in the major championship at tree-lined Woburn Golf Club.Three weeks after shooting a 64 in the first round of the U.S. Womens Open, the 25-year-old South Korean player made the last of her 10 birdies on the par-3 17th and closed with a par.Lee fell a stroke short of the LPGA Tour major record of 61 set by Hyo Joo Kim in the first round of the 2014 Evian Championship. Minea Blomqvist shot a 62 in the third round of the 2004 Womens British Open at Sunningdale, and Lorena Ochoa had a 62 in first round of the 2006 Kraft Nabisco. Lee also matched her official LPGA Tour career low set in the second round of the 2014 LPGA Taiwan.Ive shot 11 under before, Lee said. It was back in, I think, second round of LPGA Q-School, final stage. Just so happens my caddie at the time (John Kileen) was my caddie today.Ariya Jutanugarn was second after a bogey-free 65.I love this course, said Jutanugarn, the long-hitting Thai player won three straight events in May.Chinas Shanshan Feng had a 66, and American Stacy Lewis and South Koreas Mi Hyang Lee shot 67.Lee birdied the first two holes, added another on the fourth and made five straight on Nos. 7-11 to reach 8 under. She also birdied the par-3 13th on the Marquess Course, the forest layout that is a big change from the seaside links that dominate the tournament rotation. When you normally think of British Open, you think of high roughs, difficult roughs, Lee said. But here it feels more like California, so I think that really made me feel comfortable. In California at CordeValle in the U.S. Womens Open, she followed her opening 64 with rounds of 74, 76 and 73 to tie for 11th. She missed the cut in the ANA Inspiration to start the major year, and tied for fourth in the KPMG Womens PGA.I think the difference is that now Im trying to have fun, Lee said. Im trying to enjoy it, whereas in the beginning of the year, things werent really going well for me, so I really put a lot of work into it and I think its just natural that its showing, the hard work is showing now.Lee missed the cut in 2014 in her only other appearance in the event. She sat out last year because of a left thumb injury, and still tapes the thumb as a precaution.Theres no pain. Lee said. Im just using it to prevent getting injured. Its just from hitting too many balls and practicing too much. She won her two LPGA Tour titles in 2014.Lewis won in 2013 at St. Andrews. Shes winless in 56 starts since June 2014.Played real really solid. Didnt make any bogeys, Lewis said. It was great playing with Ariya. She was on fire early, which told me I needed to be aggressive and keep up.Feng misjudged the timing of the player shuttle and nearly missed her tee time. She ran to arrive just before the announcer started introducing their group.Once I showed up, I said `Im here! Feng said. I wanted to make sure they saw me.Charley Hull, the English star playing on her home course, opened with a 69.Honestly, the first tee shot today was probably the most nervous Ive ever been on a golf course, the 20-year-old Hull said. I never usually get nervous, so it was quite weird.U.S. Womens Amateur champion Hannah OSullivan had a 70.Top-ranked Lydia Ko was tied for 89th after a 74. She bogeyed her final two holes. My short game wasnt that great to cover up for the missed shots and when I did hit it close, the putts didnt go in, Ko said. When thats the case, youre not going to shoot a low score.Shes coming off a victory two weeks ago in Ohio, her fourth LPGA Tour win of the year.Second-ranked Brooke Henderson was tied for 31st at 71.I do feel I left some shots out there, Henderson said. I gave myself tons of opportunities.Ko and Henderson were off last week while many players competed in the UL International Crown team matches in Illinois. The tournament is the fourth of the LPGA Tours five major championships. Ko won the Evian last season for her first major and made it two straight at the ANA Inspiration in April. She then lost a playoff to Henderson in the KPMG Womens PGA. American Brittany Lang won the U.S. Womens Open.Lang, and fourth-ranked Lexi Thompson shot 72. Thompson teamed with Lewis, Cristie Kerr (72) and Gerina Piller (73) in the Americans International Crown.Michelle Wie had a 76. She played the first eight holes in 4 over with a birdie, three bogeys and a double bogey, then parred the final 10 holes.Third-ranked Inbee Park, the winner last year at Turnberry, is sidelined by a lingering left thumb injury. STILLWATER, Okla. -- Jordan Burtons Thanksgiving feast last week resembled most any other. His plate included dressing with cranberry sauce, corn, green beans, mashed potatoes and, of course, yams. But the Oklahoma State senior outside linebacker omitted the cornerstone of the Thanksgiving meal: the turkey.Since the summer, Burton has been a pescatarian and doesnt eat any land-walking animals. The decision can be traced to a lingering ankle injury. Burton hurt his ankle in Week 6 last season but played on the bad leg. He skipped spring practice before finally having surgery over the summer. After the surgery, Burton was trying to find any edge that would help him recover in time for his final college season. After reading about Arizona Cardinals all-pro safety Tyrann Mathieu going vegan to help overcome a knee injury, Burton opted to change his diet, which had previously included up to five Chick-fil-A chicken sandwiches a week.I figured going vegan would probably be a little too hard, probably a little too expensive for a college kid, Burton said. So I tried pescatarian -- and its been working pretty good. Not only did Burton return remarkably in time for Oklahoma States opener against Southeastern Louisiana, he has delivered another banner season for the 10th-ranked Cowboys, who travel to No. 8 Oklahoma on Saturday in a showdown that will determine the Big 12 title.Appearing in all but one game this season, Burton, who was an AP All-Big 12 selection last year, is fifth on the Cowboys with 55 tackles. He also has four tackles for loss and two interceptions.I could feel the change with the diet alone, without even running, Burton said. I was getting in shape before I started to have to run. The third and fourth quarter last year, Id be gassed. Now I feel fresh. In the beginning, Burton kept his dietary decision to himself. He didnt know how his friends or teammates would react. But once they found out, not only did they not give him flak, they went to him for nutritional advice. That was especially true after watching him make a rapid recovery from the ankle injury while trimming his body fat from 13.4 to 8.4 or so percent.Among those who went to him for advice was defensive tackle Vincent Taylor, who wanted to lose belly fat, and safety Kenneth Edison-McGruder, who had difficulty getting his weight down. Sometimes, when Burton cooks, he makes extra for Edison-McGruder, who is now at his goal weight.I have people all the time ask me, Hey, Im trying to lose weight, or trying to maintain this weight, or trying to feel better in the fourth quarter, what are you eating? Burton said. Ive had people hit me up on Twitter, asking what Ive been eating, socccer players asking.ddddddddddddIn the team dining room, Oklahoma State nutritionist Charles Hewitt has tried to cater to Burtons dietary restrictions, offering a seafood item with almost every meal. Hewitt says because of Burton, he has seen other members of the team pay more attention to what they put in their bodies. He sets an example, as an older team member, that values that aspect of his performance, Hewitt said. Other guys have seen him make that a priority, that hes not going to eat fried chicken, he not going to eat steak.Burton said becoming a pescatarian wasnt as difficult as he thought it might be. Before giving up chicken, he had already cut out pork and beef. He still goes to Chick-fil-A, only for a snack, ordering a salad with nuts, berries and ranch dressing. To keep his weight up, Burton eats four or five times daily, including oatmeal and pancakes for breakfast, peanut butter and jelly or tuna sandwiches for lunch, and fish, rice and broccoli for dinner. Burton also loves and chugs chocolate milk throughout the day for extra calories.Originally, Burton didnt give up eating land-walking animals for moral reasons. But once PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) learned of Burtons decision through a video he did with the university, they sent a letter praising his choice. Were big fans of yours, the letter read. We were so thrilled to hear you talk about your switch to a plant-based diet and happy that its working so well for you. Thanks for being a friend to the animals, and for spreading the word! Were happy to count you amongst the outstanding athletes who recognize that plant-power is the way to go.According to PETA senior vice president Lisa Lange, PETA wanted to send Burton a gift basket full of vegan options. But then they learned that would constitute an NCAA violation.Jordan is setting a wonderful example, Lange said. Because of the status of some of these football players, where so many younger football players look up to them, theres a domino effect. They see how quickly they recover, how theyre so strong and so lean, because of what theyre eating. Other athletes are going to want to follow suit.Burton has come to appreciate the moral side of being a practicing pescatarian. Once PETA sent him the letter and followed him on Twitter, he followed them back.Ive watched their videos, Burton said. I feel more connected, more so now, to the moral aspect of not killing animals on top of the nutritional aspect. It only reinforced why I was doing it -- and gave me another reason to do it. ' ' '
