MINNEAPOLIS -- Another group of former NHL players has joined the fight for compensation for head injuries they say they incurred while playing, while at the same time targeting the violence of the game that they believe brought about those injuries. Retired players Dave Christian, Reed Larson and William Bennett filed a class action lawsuit in federal court on Tuesday alleging that the league has promoted fighting and downplayed the risk of head injuries that come from it. "I think the glorified violence is really the Achilles heel for the NHL," said Charles "Bucky" Zimmerman, an attorney at Zimmerman Reed that filed the lawsuit on behalf of the players. "If anything comes of this, the focus on the glorified violence and perhaps the change to that will be a good thing." The lawsuit, which is similar to one brought by former football players against the NFL, joins others filed by hockey players in Washington and New York and seeks monetary damages and increased medical monitoring. The NHLPA declined to comment. A message was left with the NHL seeking comment. Zimmerman also worked on the football litigation, which resulted in the NFL agreeing to pay a $765 million settlement to thousands of former players. That settlement is still awaiting a judges approval, but the headlines it generated have been partially responsible for hockey players mounting their own case against the NHL. "Weve seen it in football. Its now here in hockey. Its of the same genesis," Zimmerman said. "Theres knowledge, we believe, that these type of concussive injuries were known and protections were not put in place appropriately enough and fast enough and rules changes were not implemented even today in fighting. "Players continue to be at risk and suffer as a result of those risks that they take on behalf of the sport. We think those are unreasonable and they should be changed and the players should be compensated." The lawsuit alleges "the NHL hid or minimized concussion risks from its players, thereby putting them at a substantially higher risk for developing memory loss, depression, cognitive difficulties, and even brain related diseases such as dementia, Alzheimers disease, and Parkinsons disease." One argument that tries to separate the NFL litigation from the NHL case is that by engaging in fighting, players willfully take on the health risks that could come from that. "You could make that argument only to a point," Zimmerman said. "And the point is that the fighting arena would not exist and would be outlawed as it is in every other level of the game had the NHL not condoned it and sold tickets based upon it and promoted the sport in that way. Its not the players that promote the sport in that way because the players dont implement the rules. Its the league that implements the rules. If they would outlaw fighting, there wouldnt be people who would fight." Zimmerman said he thinks more players will join the litigation much in the same way the group of plaintiffs in the NFL case exponentially grew as it progressed. "The light went on for them as the football players story was becoming more told," Zimmerman said. "I think the hockey players started to see that their story was going to be heard and told. Its not that we havent known about football players or hockey players getting hurt. Its now become more important that we talk about it and do something about it rather than just benignly let it continue into the future." The fact that as a shootout goal it wont count on the stats page doesnt bother him.It was a great feeling, said Perreault of the only goal scored in the shootout. I was looking at what the other guys were doing and they were all coming in with speed and trying to rip it so I just tried to slow it down a bit and pick a corner.Luckily it went in.Perreaults timely goal helped the Jets to improve to 6-0-2 over their past eight games.Although Perreaults shootout heroics won the game, goaltending was the story of the night. Ottawas Craig Anderson and Winnipegs Ondrej Pavelec stopped a combined 73-of-75 shots through regulation and overtime.Toby Enstrom had the goal for the Jets (8-5-2) and Pavelec made 37 saves plus six more in the shootout including a huge glove save off David Legwand.Chis Neil scored in regulation for the Senators (7-3-3) while Anderson made 36 saves and denied five skaters in the shootout.I dont like the shootouts at all. Especially ones that go that long, Pavelec said. We found a way to win and it continues what weve been doing lately. It was a tough game for us. (Anderson) has been great for Ottawa all season long and he was great again tonight. It was a battle. Its all about the two points and we got them.Neither team was able to break the 1-1 tie as they entered the third period with both goaltenders shining.Legwand did have Pavelec at his mercy with less than five minutes to play in regulation. With Mark Stuart off for tripping and the Senators enjoying their second power play of the game, the puck came to Legwand at the side of the goal but he fanned on his shot with Pavelec out of position.Mike Hoffman had a great opportunity in overtime to give Ottawa the win, but his quick shot from the slot was stopped by the quicker right pad from Pavelec.Moments later, Erik Karlsson took out Jets forward Evander Kane with a hip check at the blue-line that drew a rise out of the crowd and a long gaze from Kane at Karlsson. We had opportunities in overtime to put them away and I think we gave ourselves a chance to win and thats all you can ask for, Neil explained..ddddddddddddWhen you get to a shootout its a 50-50 coin flip and obviously (Anderson) gave us a chance to win. We werent able to bury one and it makes it tough when you cant score goals.Neil opened the scoring when he capitalized on the Senators only power play of the first period by beating Pavelec with a wrist shot on the short side at 11:48.The Jets used their only power play of the period to tie the game six minutes later when Enstroms point shot hit the post before finding the back of the net behind Anderson.Winnipeg outshot Ottawa 14-7 in the first period. It was Anderson that kept the game tied going into the second period. He had allowed just one goal in the two previous games heading into Saturday. It was one of those nights where both teams were playing pretty solid five-on-five and limiting the opportunities. At one point it both teams seemed to be throwing everything at the net and trying to generate things, Anderson said. Its a credit to both teams the way they played defensively and not allowing second and third opportunities. One of those games would be nice every once in a while to have few shots, but you have to look at the quality scoring chances and thats the key number. It doesnt matter what the shot clock is, its what kind of chances youre giving up and we played really solid defensively and didnt give up a whole lot so Im proud of the guys for doing that. The Senators outshot the Jets 12-10 in a scoreless second period that saw both goaltenders shine as they each made key saves.Notes: Chris Phillips, Bobby Ryan and Alex Caisson were all scratches for the Senators on Saturday.
